Six Americans who were imprisoned in Kuwait have been released in an agreement with the United States, a representative of their families confirmed ABC News.
The Americans, many of whom are veterans and former military contractors, were convicted of drug positions, said Jonathan Franks, a crisis management consultant.
For years, however, the prisoners have “vigorously” maintained their innocence, Franks said.

Several more prisoners are expected to be released in the coming weeks as part of the agreement, Franks added.
“This morning, the Kuwaiti government published six of my clients as part of an agreement that will finally release fifteen of my clients in a short time. Each one was convicted of drug positions, and each one keeps their innocence vigorously,” Franks said.
Drug possession sentences in Kuwait may include long prison sentences or death penalty, according to A notice by the United States Department of State.

According to the Kuwait Embassy of the United States websiteAmerican citizens are subject to Kuwait’s laws and regulations. These laws can “significantly differ from those of the United States”, and the United States government can only offer limited assistance to the charges, says the website.
